Albany State women’s uses late game heroics to down Benedict, 63-62

The Lady Golden Rams rallied in the final seconds to defeat the Benedict College Tigers (63-62) at the Jones Brothers HPER Complex on Monday night.

The 1st quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with the Rams trailing (11-15). The Lady Rams shot 36% from the field. The Rams made up some ground during the 2nd quarter as they outscored the Tigers (14-12), ending the half trailing by just 2 points (25-27).

In the 3rd quarter, the Golden Rams fell behind (47-37) as they shot around 35% from the field and 25% from beyond the 3-point line. With confidence, in the 4th quarter, the Rams, down by 7 points, rallied in the final 2 minutes when they were trailing by 8 points. They outscored the Tigers 14-5, and with 3 seconds left on the clock, Johanna Bell hit a buzzer-beating jumper to complete the comeback (63-62).

As a team, the Golden Rams shot 37.9% from the field, 33.3% from the 3-point line, and 86.7% from the free-throw line.

Keyra Peterson led the Golden Rams with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Saffold made (4) 3-pointers in the game, and Chelsea Hill added 13 points.

The Tigers shot 31.7% from the field, 29.6% from the 3-point line, and 61.5% from the free-throw line.

Kaya Evans led the Tigers with 14 points and 2 rebounds. Aaliyah Lawrence finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds, while Amaya Ashby and Dashia Jackson both scored 10 points.

The Golden Rams will travel to Fort Valley State University on Saturday, February 17th.
